While podcasting has been around since the early 2000’s, give or take, the community has grown by leaps and bounds. Podcasting is the combination of broadcasting and the iPod. More people are finding out how powerful and rewarding podcasting really is. Celebrities like Adam Corolla, Chris Hardwick, Jay Mohr, Jillian Michaels, and Marc Maron have taken to the podcast airwaves in large form. Many big companies like ESPN have also jumped on the podcast bandwagon because they see the power in the massive amounts of people that are making the leap to “audio on the go” in the form of podcasts.
Podcasts are audio and,or video shows that are recorded through a variety of different niches such as humor, business, medical, etc. Podcasts are made of up episodes covering a multitude of different formats including interviews, self-hosted rants and multiple personalities getting together to talk about their latest ventures ranging from topics about gaming to craft beer. Many people are choosing to download a show so they can listen to it on their way to and from work or while they are on a trip somewhere.
Accessibility is the key to podcasts. Since many of the podcast shows are recorded as audio files, people can listen to their favorite podcast episodes no matter where they are on their mobile devices. Platforms such as Apple’s iTunes, Stitcher Radio, Spreaker to name a few, provide easy ways to download episodes without having to be über techie. The great thing about podcasting is that as it grows, and becomes more understood by this growing community, the more people are likely to participate in this industry.
